•: The lowest operating temperature and detection limit of Zn doped MoO₃ is 100 °C and 5 ppm, respectively.
•: The highest response value of Zn doped MoO₃ to 1000 ppm ethanol is 321, which is about 15 times higher than that of pure MoO₃ nanobelts.
•: Zn sites favor to increase the absorbing of ethanol and promote the gas-solid interaction.
