Procedure for preparation of catalyst supports with nitrogen containing carbon coatings. Nitrogen containing IL was used for thermal surface modification of graphene and CNTs. The coating has a high nitrogen content of 29 wt%. An improved mass transport of educt/products was found for fuel cell applications. Compared to unmodified catalyst support systems an increased performance was observed.
