Effective desalination of inland brackish surface water by nanofiltration. Evidence for gypsum provided by microscopy and infra-red and X-ray spectroscopy. Simultaneous fouling by NOM and gypsum during NF of natural saline surface water. Relative importance of NF fouling by NOM and mineral scaling depends on salt rejection. Optimal NF selection should balance product water quality while minimizing fouling.
