Cell surface syndecan-1 contributes to binding and function of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) on epithelial tumor cells

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) binds to surface proteoglcyans on epithelial tumor cells.

Syndecan-1 is the most relevant MIF binding proteoglycan.

MIF binding is regulated by metalloproteinase-mediated syndecan-1 shedding.

MIF-induced epithelial tumor cell migration is syndecan-1 dependent.

The interaction of syndecan-1 and MIF may be relevant for tumor metastasis.
