Hydrous zirconia–coated magnetite was used for phosphate capture.

Regulation of pH was able to enhance P removal in the presence of coexisting ions.
•
Phosphate was coordinated onto zirconium by replacement of hydroxyl groups.
•
The material could be easily separated from water for reuse by a magnet.
•
Desorption of phosphate from the material could be achieved with NaOH treatment.
