First population genetic survey using mtDNA and microsatellite markers conducted for South African kingklip. High historical but lower current levels of genetic diversity and lower levels of effective population size, which may be linked to past harvesting pressures. Evidence for genetic sub-structuring; two genetic units identified with extensive gene flow between them. Genetic divergence may be due to different spawning grounds. Management implications for South African kingklip.
