Rice rats fed a standard diet developed periodontitis (PD) by age 30 wks. A high sucrose and casein (H-SC) diet accelerated the development of moderate/severe PD. Switching to STD diet does not halt/reverse the periodontitis induced by a H-SC diet. The rice rat is a good model to study pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of PD.
