A novel MS/MS approach used for first-line screening of β-thalassemia. MS/MS can be applied to screen both structural and expression abnormalities of human hemoglobin. Dried blood spots based β- thalassemia screening turn out to be convenient and efficient. Quantitative analysis of Hb and the α:β peptide ratios can improve the screening for both α- and β-thalassemia.
