Effect of flange restraints on shear Tension Field Action in cold-formed C-sections

An experimental program on channels in shear with and without lateral flange restraints is performed. Numerical simulations using the Finite Element Method (FEM) are performed to validate test results. Comparisons are made between tests and FEM results with current DSM rules for shear. The lack of lateral flange restraint leads to a significant reduction of the ultimate shear load. A further reduction factor β is introduced to the DSM design equations for shear.
