Goal-trackers attribute predictive value to reward-paired stimuli. Sign-trackers attribute predictive and incentive value to reward-paired stimuli. Incentive stimuli engage the subcortical hypothalamic–thalamic–striatal circuit. Predictive stimuli engage cortical prelimbic cells projecting to midline thalamus. The paraventricular thalamic nucleus is central to incentive motivational processes.
