This programme protects all the drug dependents of the province of Alicante entitled to a programme of methadone. Many efforts have been done to reach those that have no access to the mentioned treatment and have to be found. On this line in 1993 began a colaboration with the hospitals, and in 1994 with the prison. The total number of patients under treatment per year increased specially in 1994 and 1995 (439 and 604 respectively). In 1994 the total number of beginners in treatment was 182, and 35 those that began again. 45 % of the beginners in treatment was in programme, and 14 % of those that repeated corresponded to patients from hospitals. In 1995 the beginners were 221, and those repeating 35; 40 % of the beginners and 37 % of the repeaters were from hospitals, and 6 % of beginners came from the prison. The rate of patients under methadone treatment per 100,000 inhabitants with regard to Health Areas was very uneven, as well as its increasing. Alicante and surroundings offered a higher increased (68 in December 95). The analytical of opiates in urine of all the patients registered in the programme, 13,244 analysis, showed a percentage of negative results between 70 % in 1992 and 74 % in 1991, 1993 and 1994. With regard to cocaine, 12,197 analysis revealed an increase in positive results from 12 % of the samples in 1990 to 22 % in 1993; in 1995 it was 21 % . Cannabis had the highest consumption, 78 % in 1991, and decreased to 52 % in 1995. The consumption of benzodiazepines increased in 1994 and 1995. In the Penitentiary Institution was detected a lower consumption of opiates and cocaine, approximately 94 % and 99 % respectively of negative results, but a higher consumption in benzodiazepines. The data corresponding to the number of patients under treatment and consumption of cocaine in this population differ from those of the Drug National Plan.
