Low Ni-Cr alloy cast iron can be directly prepared from red mud and laterite nickel ore. Producing a high value-added material during the extraction of iron is a new idea for the utilization of red mud. The mass ratio of red mud to laterite nickel ore is the main factor contributing to the Ni and Cr contents of the cast iron. High-temperature direct carbothermal reduction by an electric arc furnace is very feasible to handle red mud.
