Hsp31p is a budding yeast orthologue of Parkinson's disease-associated DJ-1 protein. It is a multi-stress response protein controlled by multiple TFs. It protects cells against methylglyoxal and other toxic products of glycolysis. It may be crucial for budding yeast survival in methylglyoxal-rich natural niches.
