Activation of ceramide synthesis de novo with Des1 blockade induces autophagy. Dihydroceramides mediate the activation of the autophagic flux. The autophagic flux is also induced in a dihydroceramide-independent manner. The role of dihydroceramides in the autophagy outcome is discussed.
