A real-world high impact problem in chemical logistics is considered. We study a payload-based rail car (RC) fleet optimization problem. Our model provides suggestions for different RC sizes/volumes and their quantities. We present two solution approaches for the original MINLP formulation. Based on real-world company data we derive recommendations for the fleet redesign.
