We study a market-based TDR program in Chengdu, China. We see land commodification as an inherently political process. The land commodity was created through complex political processes. Chengdu’s TDR program created an outcome of ‘commodification without dispossession’. Land commodification is at the forefront of the re-casting of rural China by capitalism.
