Maternal vascular malperfusion (MVM) lesions are the most common placental lesion in GDM. Excess gestational weight gain is independently associated with MVM lesions. MVM lesions are associated with increased risk for small for gestational age birth weight. MVM lesions are also associated with preterm birth and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. MVM lesions may link excess gestational weight gain to adverse pregnancy outcomes.
