Diverters perceive their close friends as more approving of more frequent NMUPS. Diverters rate themselves and their close friends as more approving of NMUPS motives. Diverters rate distal referent groups as more approving of NMUPS for educational purposes. Interventions should focus on correcting NMUPS approval misperceptions.
