ALS activity of putative R CYPDI and SCHMU biotypes was not inhibited by bensulfuron-methyl. Elevated ALS resistance (I50 ≥ 10,000 in R) likely stems from an altered target-site. Results indicated R biotypes do not have an enhanced production of ALS enzymes. Cross-resistance to other herbicidal modes of action is unlikely in R CYPDI and SCHMU. The optimized ALS assay led to a 1.5 to 3-fold increase in number of assays per g tissue. New protocol can suit weeds that produce small amount of foliage at early growth stages.
