Social context modulates the relationship between hormones and social status. Alphas in despotic groups have higher testosterone levels than lower status males. Subordinates that win have higher testosterone than those that rarely win. Alphas in despotic groups have lower corticosterone levels than lower status males. Subordinates in hierarchies have higher corticosterone than subordinates in pairs.
