Novel water-soluble benzimidazolium salts have been synthesized and their interactions with metal ions in non-buffered pure aqueous media have been investigated by fluorescence studies. All probes are very selective and sensitive towards Fe3+ ions. The detection limit of probe 1 for Fe3+ ions is 2.8 μM which is lower than WHO guidelines (5 μM).
