Gas-leak-induced thermal pinhole formation at PEMFC electrode edges was demonstrated. The pinhole caused the fatal cell failure during an initial conditioning. The pinhole formation occurred when the leaked gas hit the protruding catalyst from GDL. No pinhole appeared in GDL-covered catalyst despite a large gas leak.
