CRISPR-Cas is an RNA-guided adaptive immune system of bacteria that protects from phages and plasmids. Type II CRISPR-Cas9 has recently emerged as a key technology for targeted genome editing of many organisms. It has been used to create animal models, control infection of bacteria and viruses, and correct defective genes. Repurposing CRISPR-Cas9 has been used for targeted gene repression, activation, and loci imaging. CRISPR-Cas9 shows great potential for biomedical, therapeutic, industrial and biotechnological applications.
