A mathematical model to study the energy efficiency of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell with a dead-ended anode

This model can predict the performance of a single cell in dead-ended anode mode. Variations in local performance and gas composition during the purge were captured. The optimal purge duration ranges from 0.2 to 0.4 s using a voltage-drop strategy. The optimal purge duration is 0.1 s using a nitrogen accumulation strategy. A possible way to apply the model is suggested.
