Butterflies preferred leaves that were more fertilized as oviposition sites. Butterflies avoided laying eggs on leaves with conspecifics. During oviposition, choosier butterflies were choosy in multiple contexts. Ovipositing butterflies showed trade-offs between choosiness and fecundity. Choosiness during oviposition can be considered a life-history trait.
