Airway cells with lower SMPD1 activity increases neutrophil chemotaxis towards them. Decreasing SMPD1 activity in epithelial cells leads to higher cytokine secretion. Decreasing SMPD1 activity results in a pro-oxidative shift of epithelial cells. An inactive SMPD1 mutant activates NRF2 in airway epithelial cells.
