Pre-intercalated molecules blocked methoxy-grafting at first but enhanced it later. The structural collapse mechanism of methoxy-grafted kaolinite was proposed. Water and methanol molecules affect the structure of methoxy-grafted kaolinite. A small amount of pre-intercalated molecules still existed in the above final product.
