Prediction of a contact induced failure of an SFR fuel rod end cap using an acceleration test

Contact induced failure of an SFR fuel rod was predicted by an acceleration test. Hertzian contact and partial slip are assumed from the contact analysis using FEA. Modal analysis result showed 15 Hz and 0.7 mm for the test frequency and amplitude. Test time was determined as 16.5 h to have a B000.4 life with 99% reliability. The integrity of the fuel rod was expected since no wear or cracking was observed.
