The Late Triassic Gufeng ocean island (GFOI) is a typical ocean island that formed within the Bangong–Nujiang Tethyan Ocean. The range of basalts from MORB to OIB types is found within the GFOI. Geochemical analyses of the GFOI cherts show that they contain terrigenous material, indicating the proximity of a continental margin. The western segment of the Bangong–Nujiang Tethyan Ocean has developed as a mature ocean during the Late Triassic.
