Carbamazepine (CBZ)-induced Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis (SJS/TEN) is strongly associated with the HLA-B*1502 allele.

This allele is highly prevalent in Han Chinese, Malay, Thai and Indian populations.

Many clinicians are unaware of the potential risks and availability of genetic testing.

HLA-B∗1502 genotyping has been proven to decrease cases of CBZ-induced SJS/TEN.

Guidelines by regulatory bodies such as the Epilepsy Society of Australia should be strengthened.
