Selection of reference populations is essential for establishing reference limits for troponin assays. We established a Korean reference population according to the strict selection criteria formulated by Sandoval et al. The reference limits from our findings differed from those provided by the manufacturers. Reference limits from appropriate reference populations are important for the accurate interpretation of troponin assays. Four out of six assays did not fulfill the criteria for high sensitivity tests.
