Effects of an alcohol prevention program on smoking and cannabis use were examined.

No consistent favorable effects on smoking and cannabis use were found.

Negative side effects of the parent only intervention were found, particularly at earlier ages.

Important mediators for alcohol use did not play a role in the onset of smoking and cannabis use.

Results indicate the need for multi-target interventions.
