Three characteristics of NSSI were examined in the NSSI–SA relationship.

NSSI frequency, methods and subjective pain were each positively associated with SA.

Subjective pain was the only moderator of the NSSI–SA relationship.

The NSSI-SA association was stronger for those who experienced lower subjective pain.
