We tested experimentally if fine and grapho-motor skills effect reading development.
•
Children learned to read new letters and words using two “special” pens.
•
One pen had a heavy weight on one end to increase fine motor demands.
•
Grapho-motor skills causally linked to early reading development in preschoolers.
•
Writing while learning to read worked well, when motor demands were not too great.
