Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a well-established method for measuring the (in)efficiency amongst a group of decision making units (DMUs). If DEA is applied under variable returns to scale, one can obtain a DMU’s returns to scale; such information then helps to decide whether its activity should be up- or downsized. But often it becomes clear that some of these recommendations are impracticable–we call such a case RTS-maverick. Therefore, we present a new approach to treat this issue.
