A model of dynamic stability of H3K9me3 heterochromatin to explain the resistance to reprogramming of differentiated cells

H3K9me3 heterochromatin is robustly maintained in a dynamical manner. A new role is proposed for the accumulation of SUV39H1/2 enzymes in heterochromatin. The local concentration of SUV39H1/2 can counteract H3K9 demethylation bursts. Chromocenters are envisioned as microdomains specifying local concentrations. The concentrations of free and bound chromatin-modifying enzymes should be functionally distinguished.
