A botanical survey in the Cantabrian mining area was combined with trace element analysis in plants and rhizosphere soil. The 82 characterized species represents all higher plant species that spontaneously colonize the metal-polluted spoil heaps. The species phytoremediation potential is discussed based on shoot accumulation and soil to shoot transfer factors.
