Pinus resinosa regeneration was limited regardless of retention pattern. Browse, disease and seedbed conditions likely limited P. resinosa regeneration. A recalcitrant shrub layer filtered regeneration response to retention pattern. Artifacts of altered disturbance regimes need to be considered in planning VRH.
