Impacts of combined overfishing and oil spills on the plankton trophodynamics of the West Florida shelf over the last half century of 1965-2011: A two-dimensional simulation analysis of biotic state transitions, from a zooplankton- to a bacterioplankton-m
An overfishing-induced trophic cascade led to decimation of WFS zooplankton, with a subsequent increment of bacteria-mediated export of sea spray-entrained, wind-borne HAB aerosols to adjacent humans, comprising 48% of the annual net primary production of minimally-grazed HABs.
•
Unusually strong upwelled nutrient supplies for otherwise Si-limited diatoms, with less susceptibility to oil poisons, allowed these retrograde diatom competitors to win against HABs during the Deepwater Horizon oil spills.
•
Return of usual oligotrophy led to reoccurrence once more of HAB fish killers and human asthma triggers.
