Optical characterization of Tm3+ in a high barium-tellurite glass in absence and presence of Yb3+: Evidence of strong crystal-field effect and efficient Yb3+→Tm3+ energy transfer
Optical properties of Tm3+ ion are studied in a (high Ba)-tellurite glass.

The glass shows strong absorption and intense IR-emission properties.
•
Judd–Ofelt data suggest – the Tm3+ ion in this glass experiences strong crystal field.
•
Yb3+-co-doped glass shows strong 804 nm upconversion emission from its Tm3+ ion under 980 nm laser excitation.
•
Optical data show prospect of use of the glasses as IR laser medium and as bio-marker.
