Epo-R is expressed and functionally active in mature osteoblasts and preosteoclasts. Epo stimulates osteoblasts only at supraphysiological doses in vitro. Low doses of Epo promote in vitro differentiation of bone resorbing osteoclasts. In bone regeneration models, Epo enhances angiogenesis and bone healing. In atraumatic models, Epo suppresses bone formation and stimulates bone resorption.
