Microscale mechanical and mineral heterogeneity of human cortical bone governs osteoclast activity

We measured surface topography of human cortical bone before and after osteoclast resorption. We showed that human osteoclasts resorb specific osteons of human cortical bone. Nanoindentation showed a significantly lower Young’s modulus in resorbed versus unresorbed osteons. We report a decrease in mineral content of resorbed osteons associated with smaller crystallinity.
