In-situ bitumen extraction associated with increased petrogenic polycyclic aromatic compounds in lake sediments from the Cold Lake heavy oil fields (Alberta, Canada)
A sediment core was collected from a lake near in-situ drilling wells.
•
Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) increased after drilling operations began.
•
Evidence suggests a petrogenic source for PAC increases.
•
In-situ bitumen extraction can release PACs to nearby aquatic ecosystems.
