A GIS decision support tool and an aquaculture production model were successfully combined to improve oyster aquaculture siting capability.
•
The improved siting and expansion tool can be used in any location with existing GIS decision support and water quality monitoring.
•
A 16-year time series in two locations consistently predicted superiority of one, despite inter-annual variability in time to reach harvest size.
•
Annual average chlorophyll a concentration > 4.50 μg L− 1 indicates good growth, 2.69 μg L− 1 is the sustainability threshold.
