Combusted but not smokeless tobacco products cause DNA damage in oral cavity cells

Different human oral cavity cell phenotypes were exposed to different tobacco product preparations.

DNA damage was assessed by Comet assays and immunofluorescence for 纬-H2AX protein.

Combusted tobacco product TPM caused substantial DNA damage in oral cavity cell.

Non-combusted tobacco products ST/CAS or NIC exerted no or only minimal DNA damage.

Data support epidemiologic evidence for reduced harm of non-combusted tobacco products.
