The optimization of l-lactic acid production from sweet sorghum juice by mixed fermentation of Bacillus coagulans and Lactobacillus rhamnosus under unsterile conditions
Open fermentation of l-lactic acid with high efficiency from SSJ was developed.

Mixed fermentation of B. coagulans and L. rhamnosus were investigated.
•
Stepwise controlled pH was adopted for contamination suppression.
•
Product titer, yield and productivity were 121 g L−1, 94.6% and 2.18 g L−1 h−1.
•
CSP substituting YE & salts was proved an efficient supplement for SSJ.
