Leg compressions are commonly used by elite and recreational endurance athletes as an ergogenic aid to improve athletic performance. A progressive graded exercise stress test determined if leg compressions would improve cardiorespiratory, exercise economy, perceived exertion and post exercise lactate. Compression socks improved ventilatory efficiency, reduced peak and post exercise blood lactate, while improving ventilatory efficiency and and respiratory exchange ratio. Compression socks may aid in modifying lactate metabolism through alterations in ventilation during submaximal and maximal exercise.
