Isolation of single physical parameter, length, using glass fibers. Length-dependent increase in inflammatory response of macrophages to glass fibers. Dose-dependent cytokine production not accompanied by fiber-induced cytotoxicity. Critical lengths of frustrated phagocytosis are revealed by quantitative models. Potentially use to weigh contributions of fiber length against other parameters.
