Enkephalin and GABA are the major internal neurotransmitters of the IGL network. Both NPY-positive and -negative neurons are postsynaptically hyperpolarized by ENK. The μ opioid receptors are predominantly present on the IGL neurons. Enkephalin modulates synaptic transmission in both NPY-positive and enkephalinergic IGL neurons.
