Antiseptic mouthwash attenuates the antihypertensive effects of nitrate. It is unknown whether antiseptic mouthwash changes the effects of nitrite. The antihypertensive effects of nitrite were not affected by antiseptic mouthwash. Nitrite and nitrate increase S-nitrosothiols formation and vascular S-nitrosylation. Antiseptic mouthwash blunts nitrate but not nitrite-induced S-nitrosylation.
